A Non-Governmental Organisation (NGO) ActionAid Ghana has conducted a pre-season farming forum in Tumu, Sissala East Municipality, to empower and strengthen the capacity of women farmers.

The forum provided opportunities for farming, production, marketing, and agro-processing along with a venue for networking between women farmers and agro-input dealers.

The forum’s agro-input vendors featured representatives from the Department of Agriculture, Organic Farming Aid (OFA), Agrisolve, tractor operators, and more.

The women farmers were trained on how to handle pesticides properly and how to spray chemicals on their farms while wearing protective clothing, among other things.

ActionAid Ghana’s Upper West Regional Programme Officer, Madam Zenabu Nibaradun, told the Ghana News Agency that women from various areas had come together to discuss opportunities in the agriculture value chain and how to take advantage of them.

She said the forum made available the opportunities in the government policy of the Planting for food and jobs and how accessible the programmes were to the welfare of the women farmers.

“We want women to know the existing opportunities and how and where they can access them easily”, she said.

The forum brought together 66 women farmers from 30 communities to participate and build their capacity within the agriculture industry.
