The minister for food and agriculture, Dr. Owusu Akoto Afriyie says that a decision has been made to expand the GreenHouse Village to the Western part of Accra and also the middle part of Ghana.
He noted that the GreenHouse Village concept was a contract signed by the previous government, to help make Ghana self-sufficient in Vegetable production so as to be able to supply to European countries.
The minister said the previous government signed this contract with an Israelian company to do a GreenHouse Village at Dowenya.
The concept of Greenhouse Villages is wholly embraced because of its potential benefits to actors along the vegetable value chain and the economy as a whole. The center is for both production and training.
The Minister was speaking on the Peace FM Kokrooko Show on Thursday, March 03, 2022.
He explained that, when trainees on these farm villages complete their term at the village, a lot of them come out without real farm experience and so end up doing nothing with the training they receive.
Dr Akoto disclosed the government has decided to send these trainees to Israel to work on farms as interns in order to gain more farm experience, after which they are employed to work on farms here in Ghana and are paid.
“About 198 trainees have been sent to Israel, most of them have returned and have been employed. They are very comfortable as well because even though they are being paid between 1,200-1,500, they have been given free accommodation and food daily” the minister concluded.
