New maize variety introduced to farmers in Eastern Region

Farmers in the farming village of Otareso, which is located in the Eastern Region’s Akuapem North municipality, have been introduced to a hybrid high-yielding type of maize.

When grown during the right growing season, the grain known as “Aburoo Legon” (Legacy 2) may produce about nine tonnes of maize per hectare.

It is the first of its sort to be made available in the country. The Alliance for a Green Revolution in Africa (AGRA), the private sector, the West Africa Centre for Crop Improvement, and the Legacy Crop Improvement Center(LCIC) collaborated on research to create the Aburoo Legon (Legacy 2).

It has been licensed by the state through the Ministry of Food and Agriculture.

The Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of LCIC, Dr. Amos Azinu, explained the new variety to the farmers on a demonstration farm in Otareso and stated that the farmers will benefit from the new maize type.

Dr. Azinu pointed out that because of the new breed’s significantly higher yield, farmers’ incomes would rise significantly, which would enhance both their living conditions and those of their dependents.
He said that the new Aburoo Legon’s seed cost was far lower than that of other imported varieties, making Ghanaian maize farmers able to purchase it.
