Public, private institutions join Green Ghana exercise

Public and private institutions nationwide on Friday joined the second edition of the “Green Ghana Day” which aimed to plant 20 million trees to help restore the country’s lost forest cover.

From Koforidua, Ama Tekyiwaa Ampadu Agueman reports that the Eastern Regional exercise was led by the Regional Minister, Seth Acheampong, Executive Director of Forestry Division, Edith Abrokwah, and the Municipal Chief Executive for New Juaben South, Isaac Appaw-Gyasi.

The region targeted to plant 2,500,000 forest, ornamental and fruit tree seedlings in various degraded and deforested landscapes in seven forest districts.

At the Anim Retreat Centre of the Christ Apostolic Church International at Ofarkor, the General Secretary of the Church, Apostle Samuel Amponsah Frimpong, led the church members to plant trees. It targeted 5,000 trees.

David O. Yarboi-Tetteh reports from Cape Coast that the Forestry Commission (FC) in collaboration with the management of the University of Cape Coast (UCC) planted 60,000 seedlings on a 124-acre land. It coincidentally marked the 60th anniversary of the university.

Present at the ceremony were the Vice-Chancellor of UCC, Prof. Johnson Nyarko Boampong, the Paramount Chief of the Oguaa Traditional Area, Osabarima Kwesi Atta Il and other chiefs as well as the security services.

Rafia Abdul Razak Wa in the Upper West Region, reports that the Resilience Against Climate Change (REACH) assisted the headmaster, teachers and pupils of the Samanbo D/A Basic School to plant trees.

The REACH team led by the Project Manager, Mr Simon Kunyangna, planted 50 tree seedlings. At the exercise held at Ablekuma North Municipal Assembly, the Municipal Chief Executive, Kofi Ofori urged Ghanaians to habitually support the the tree planting exercise.

The Member of Parliament for the area, Sheila Bartels, urged all inhabitants of the area to plant trees in their neighborhood and derive the benefits such as the provision of shade, oxygen and beautification.

Agnes Opoku Sarpong reports that the Greater Accra Regional Minister, Mr Henry Quartey planted a cocoa seedling at the Tetteh Quarshie Interchange in Accra as a sign to remember Tetteh Quarshie for being the first person who brought cocoa beans to Ghana.

Out of the targeted 20 million tree to be planted this, he said 2.5 million of the such as native timber tree species shade trees, multi-purpose leguminous trees, ornamentals and fruit trees would be planted in Accra.

From Bolgatanga, Francis Dabre Dabang reports that hundreds of workers drawn from various institutions observed the event at the respective municipal and district capitals.

The Region led by the Regional Minister, Stephen Yakubu, targeted growing over 650,00 trees as against the 2021 target of 170,000 target.

Daniel Dzirasah reports from the Bui in Bono Region that officials of the Bui Power Authority (BPA) joined the Ghana National Fire service and school pupils of Jama DA JHS to plant trees.

The officials included the Deputy Director, Occupational Health, Safety and Environment, Christentus Kuunifaa and the Director of Estate, BPA Wumbilla Salifu.
