MOFA urges farmers to switch to organic fertilizers due to fertilizer shortage

Organic manure in the sack

The Ministry of food and Agriculture is urging Ghanaian farmers to use organic fertiliser for their planting this season.

This is because Ghana does not have enough fertilizer currently in the country and fertiliser prices have increased from Ghc120 to Ghc450 due to challenges being faced globally.

Speaking on Citi Fm breakfast show, the PRO of the Ministry of Agriculture Mr Bagbara Tanko, said this in reaction to concerns raised by farmers on what to do whiles preparing for the planting season this year.

According to him, the government is unable to provide fertilizer subsidies whiles Fertilizer companies are unable to supply fertilizer to the country as a result of the war between Russia and Ukraine as Russia is the world’s biggest exporter of fertilizer.

Fertilizer is key to crop production and it forms the main input in the farming process. Fertilizer provides the needed nutrition that plants need to get the right yields. Due to its unavailability, Ghanaian farmers are currently unsure about what to do during the planting season.

Reacting to this, some individuals expressed concern about the nutritional value of organic fertilizer, stating that you will need much more organic fertilizer as compared to inorganic fertilizer.

Due to the current challenges, Ghana is predicted to see a decrease in food output for the forthcoming season, causing food prices to rise.
