‘Nserewa Rice Call’ launched to support rice farmers

WeComm, an Agri-media marketing agency and consultancy limited, on Monday launched the “NSEREWA RICE CALL”, an initiative that offers Ghanaians the opportunity to sponsor a farm and receive reward after nine months. Partnered by Newage Agric Solutions Limited, Ghana Agricultural Insurance Pool (GAIP), Agro Africa and the Chi-Gaba Project, the Nserewa Rice Call also provides farmers with the needed support in farming rice.

Launching the project in Accra, the General Manager of WeComm Agri-Media and Consultancy Limited, Kojo Akoto Boateng noted that the Nserewa project brought people together to sponsor soya, maize and rice farming.

He indicated that the project has so far farmed 1,000 acres of soya and maize in Babator in the Northern Region and had intended to farm some acres of rice in some areas in the Volta Region.

WeComm’s General Manager explained that the rice Project would run from March to November and “involved planting, harvesting, milling, bagging and putting the rice on the market to create value for farmers, sponsors and the Ghanaian market.  Mr Boateng said sponsorship of the project was valued at 2, 022 for an acre, the least one could sponsor for rewards after nine months period.’

“This whole project is trying to give farmers the support they need. To sponsor an acre of rice you need GHc 2,022. This will go into buying seed, fertilizer, herbicides and insecticides to give to farmers plus insurance to grow rice,” he stated.

“And the sponsors of the rice project get rewards, so whatever rice that we get as our yield, you get rewarded at the end of the production period of 9 months”, he added.

Mr Boateng said the project will contribute to the country’s food security by ensuring all year-round food production and distribution. He, therefore, used the opportunity to call on Ghanaians to support made-in-Ghana products by sponsoring the project so as to invest in the country’s economy.

Mr Martin Tettey Nartey, General Manager of Newage Agric Solutions in his remarks said Nserewa was a unique contract farming initiative that his organization was proud to be associated with.  He reiterated that the project “shall contribute over 2,000 metric tonnes of Paddy rice to the national food basket.”

“My team and I believe that a vision without action is merely a dream. Action without vision just passes the time but vision with action can change the world,” he added.
